An accident takes place almost every day on Sina-Male' Bridge: Police

Maldives Police Service has revealed an accident has taken place almost every day on the Sina-Male' Bridge since its inauguration.

While the Sina-Male' bridge was opened for traffic on September 7, so far 167 accidents have taken place on the bridge. 37 accidents have taken place on the bridge and 61 accidents have taken place on the highway, according to statistics of Maldives Police Service. Meanwhile, 68 accidents have taken place on the Male' Ring Road connecting to the bridge. Police revealed 15 people suffered serious injuries in these accidents.

Police also said the major causes of accidents include overtaking vehicles without precaution and lack of distance kept between vehicles while driving. Police stated most accidents on the ring road took place due to U-turns and not using the lanes properly, according to statistics.

Speaking to PSM News, Traffic Investigation Head of Police, Chief Inspector Ibrahim Rifau said accidents will be minimised if people respect and follow the traffic regulations properly. He expressed most accidents are caused due to speeding, adding 40 percent of accidents took place on Sina-Male' Bridge due to speeding.

Furthermore, the police has asked the public to cooperate in investigations of the accidents. While the police continuously advise to work together to minimise accidents, installation of cameras are underway on the bridge and highway to enhance the investigations.
