Adeeb's wife expresses discontent on conditions in jail

Wife of Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb, Mariyam Nashwa, has accused Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla of acting in the place of doctors in the treatment of her jailed husband.

Addressing a press conference held at the office of the Maldives Third-Way Democrats (MTD), Mariyam Nashwa said upon Adeeb being admitted at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) due to complications, it was the home minister that carried out all work related to discharging him and transferring him to house arrest. She added the sudden transfer of Adeeb to the jail on Saturday clearly shows who is acting in the place of a doctor to discharge Adeeb.

Nashwa also said the patient admitted in the room next to Adeeb was a relative of Imran and he visited the patient frequently. However, she said the minister never checked on Adeeb.

Nashwa also accused the former vice president is being held at the smallest cell in the Special Protection Unit in Mafushi Prison, with a 60 year old sex offender as a cellmate. She said she fails to understand why Adeeb should be jailed with an elderly sex offender convicted of abusing children or why a detainee that needs family care should be jailed with an elderly detainee. She also claimed the radiation from an industrial cell phone-jammer installed right outside her husband's cell is also affecting his health.

The former vice president was sentenced to 33-years in prison following terrorism and corruption charges.
