Labour Relations Authority has begun investigating a case of 1,000 expatriates working in a resort development project.
Speaking at a press conference held by the authority, Information Officer Ali Shareef said 318 locations, including 30 resorts, have been inspected to identify illegally employed expatriates. The authority has already identified 1,000 expatriates working in a resort development project and revealed the case is being seriously investigated due to the unusual high number, according to the official.
Noting the illegal hiring of expatriates by foreign companies has been brought to attention, the authority said locals bringing them to Maldives should be held responsible. Moreover, the authority revealed a circular has been published asking the relevant parties to refrain from illegal labour related activities. 90 percent of staff in some resorts are foreigners, according to the labour authority.
