Precautionary measures not taken, safety procedures not implemented at construction sites: MACI

Maldives Association of Construction Industry (MACI) has said it is noticeable that precautionary measures are not taken and safety procedures are not implemented at construction sites in Maldives. MACI made the remarks in a statement issued in the wake of a little girl sustaining serious injuries while walking on the pavement next to a construction site.

MACI highlighted it has on several occasions urged to follow all safety regulations for construction sites and guidelines to ensure safety of construction workers and the general public. However, MACI noted recent records show several incidents occurring due to negligence and irresponsibility. The association once more urged all relevant parties to give importance to public safety and follow the laws and regulations to ensure such incidents do not take place.

A Bangladeshi girl, whose parents are doctors working in Maldives, sustained serious injuries and is being treated in Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH). CCTV footage circulated in social media shows a bag of cement falling from a building under construction and striking the girl who was walking on the pavement. The 9-year-old girl was seen collapsing under the weight of the bag. She was immediately taken to IGMH. The hospital had so far informed the girl is in critical condition.
