70% of deaths caused by non-communicable diseases: HPA

Statistics reveals 70 percent of deaths in Maldives are caused due to non-communicable diseases.

Speaking at a meeting held to provide information regarding the National Food Based Dietary Guideline by Health Protection Agency (HPA), Dr. Moosa Muraad stated the number of deaths by non-communicable diseases are increasing among the youth. In this regard Dr. Muraad noted now the average rate of deaths as a result of non-communicable diseases in Maldives is at 70 percent.

Most deaths in Maldives are caused due to hypertension, diabetes, heart diseases and stroke as well as cancer. Meanwhile, Muraad revealed the main cause of deaths as a result of non-communicable diseases is due to the change in lifestyle and dietary.

The number of patients diagnosed with non-communicable diseases are increasing significantly in Maldives.
