JP becomes the minority party in parliament

Jumhooree Party (JP) has become the minority party in the Parliament.

JP became the minority party when Deputy Parliamentary Group Leader of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Riyaz Rasheed signed for the party. Following the signing of Riyaz Rasheed, the number of parliamentarians representing JP at the Parliament has now increased to 22. Riyaz Rasheed has spent 14 years as a parliamentarian and was a former member of JP before signing for PPM.

Although several parliamentarians are joining the parties representing the government, the parliament majority is still controlled by PPM with 28 members. With 19 parliamentarians representing Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), the joint parliamentary group backing the government coalition now stands at 46.
