President-Elect says he does not want anyone to say his term began unconstitutionally

President-Elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated he does not want to provide room for anyone to say his term in office commenced unconstitutionally. He made the statement at the preliminary debate on the motion submitted to seek the parliament's opinion on the date on which the president-elect and the vice president-elect would be sworn in.

Speaking at the parliament for the first time since his election victory, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said he believed a decision on the matter should be unanimous. He added any decision by the parliament should be made, after clearing any doubts.

The opposition coalition believes the president-elect and the vice president-elect should be sworn in on Republic Day, which falls on November 11, while the government maintains the five-year term of incumbent President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom will end on November 17.
