Maldives calls for fostering a culture of peace

Permanent Representative of Maldives to the United Nations Dr Ali Naseer Mohamed has stated that fostering a culture of peace requires the media, including the companies that own social media platforms to ensure that the free media is not used as an instrument to incite hate and to plan and to carry out acts of terrorism. He made the statement addressing the UN General Assembly.

Ambassador Naseer expressed hopes that Maldives gets elected to the UN Security Council for the term 2019-2020 and assured that Maldives would contribute in strengthening the Council's ability in shaping a shared vision of peace. He stated that, President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom is implementing policies to enable all Maldivian to dream bigger and to achieve higher in life.

In this regard, he added that in order to achieve this goal, President Yameen believes in the principles of cultivating a culture of peace, of respect, of tolerance, and to cherish the value of compromise.

Ambassador Naseer further highlighted the importance of education and stated that it is a mentor into the realm of possibilities, to look further, to try harder, and to return to the natural conditions of human co-existence.

Ambassador Naseer stressed  on the importance of maintaining peace as it is the natural condition for the existence of humanity, and said that war and aggression are artificially created hurdles that hamper the basic human instincts of cooperation and co-existence.
