Weather conditions stabalize in Maldives

Maldives Meteorological Service has forecast that the weather conditions in Maldives would stabilize as the cyclonic storm, Ockhi gradually moves towards Lakshwadeep Islands.

Nevertheless, Maldives Meteorological Service forecasts rain and a few thundershowers across the country. Cyclone Ockhi, which began as a depression in the Bay of Bengal, has been intensifying over the past 6 hours.

As per the forecast of Maldives Meteorological Service the cyclonic storm which is currently at the Arabic Sea is gradually moving North West towards the Lakshwadeep Islands. Met Office forecast fairly widespread rain with occasional heavy showers and thunderstorms over the country with surface winds varying between south-west and westerly at 15 to 20 miles per hour in all parts of Maldives. Surface winds are expected to rise by 50 miles per hour during showers.

"The Cyclone is now heading towards Lakshwadeep Islands and is expected to recurve in the next 36 hours. Talking about weather in Maldives, Cyclone is moving away from Maldives rain clouds are getting less in Maldivian area. But we are expecting scattered rain shower and heavy showers." Meteorological officer said. 

As seas are expected to be generally rough throughout the country, the Meteorological Office still advises to avoid any sea transportation, unless necessary. Sea travelers are also advised to take extra precaution against strong winds and rough seas and to notify the authorities about their journeys.

"There will be still be strong wind speed such that wind speed would be between 15 to 20 miles per hour. But the wind may increase upto 50 miles per hour in shower." Meteorological officer said.

The cyclone formed in the region caused flooding in several islands of Maldives which resulted in damages to households and crops. Relevant authorities in Maldives are continuously working to monitor the situation across the country.
