Local Council Elections Postponed for the third time

Elections Commission postpones the upcoming Local Council Elections, due to the ongoing influenza outbreak in the country.

According to the commission, EC made the decision after taking Health Protection Agency HPA's advice into account and discussed the issue with the Commission's advisory committee.

This is the third time Elections Commission has postponed the local council election.

The elections which was previously scheduled for the 15th of April has now been postponed for the 6th of May.

Speaking at a press briefing held last night to announce the postponement of the election Vice President at the Elections Commission Amjad Musthafa said the decision delay the elections was made with the full support of the national advisory committee to the commission.

He said there were no legal obstacles in delaying the election.

Amjad added that some of the work in preparation for the election was put in hold due to the outbreak which also contributed to the decision.

He further highlighted that since a lot of people will be gathering in places due to an election which is not an ideal concept in the current state.

According to EC reregistration of voters for the election will be opened in the future.

It added that there will not be any changes to the candidates and candidate numbers which was appointed recently.

One thousand 4 hundred and 87 candidates will be contesting in the local council election.
