President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has today ratified the 13th Amendment Bill to the Export Import Act (Act No. 31/79). The Amendment was passed by the Parliament at the 9th sitting of its first session, on 1st March 2017. Following ratification, the bill has been published in the Government Gazette.
Due to the amendments brought to the bill, 15% duty will be charged from water amongst off the rack liquids. Apart from this, MVR 4.60 will be charged as duty from 1 litre of soft drinks and MVR 33.64 will be charged as duty from 1 litre of energy drinks.
Similarly, due to the amendments brought to the bill, MVR 2 will be charged from each cigarette increasing the duty of cigarettes to 25%.
