Local council polls delayed for second time

The Elections Commission (EC) on Wednesday postponed the local council elections to April 15, the second postponement since December.

The elections were originally scheduled for January 14 but was pushed back to April 8 following a Civil Court ruling.

The Commission attributed the latest postponement to the unavailability of school halls for the polling date.

“The Education Ministry has informed the Commission that it is unable to lease school halls for April 8 as many schools have organised activities for that day,” Amjad Musthafa, Vice President of the Elections Commission, told a press conference on Wednesday . The decision to delay the polls to April 15 was made with approval from the National Advisory Committee which includes representatives from political parties, he added.
