EC, MPS sign agreement on election security

The Elections Commission (EC) and the Maldives Police Service (MPS) on Tuesday signed an agreement outlining security procedures for the upcoming local council elections.

At a ceremony held today at Iskandhar Koshi, the agreement was signed by Local Council Elections Operations Commander in Chief, Superintend of Police Hamdhoon Rasheed and President of the Elections Commission Ahmed Sulaiman.

According to MPS, over 3000 police personnel will be deployed to ensure security at polling stations on voting day. 

Speaking after signing the agreement, Deputy President of the Elections Commission Amjad Musthafa said that the agreement will help maintain security measures in the run-up and during the election. 

Superintend of Police Hamdhoon Rasheed said they were preparing to deploy security teams at polling stations to ensure security throughout the election.

EC says that 444 ballot boxes will be placed in the upcoming local council elections.

Out of the 444 ballot boxes, 132 will be placed in the capital Male’ City and 312 in the atolls, it said.

The vote, slated for January 14, will see the election of 651 members to island, atoll and city councils.
