More than eight million bus journeys were recorded in the Greater Malé Region in 2025, according to figures from Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).
Raajje Transport Link (RTL), operated by MTCC, recorded 8.2 million bus journeys in the Greater Malé Region in 2025. This represents a 32 per cent increase from the 6.2 million recorded in 2022, when the service began.
Since its introduction in 2022, RTL has become one of the most widely used modes of daily transport in the Greater Malé Region. The number of times people used the service has remained above eight million over the past three years, reaching 8.1 million in 2023 and 8.4 million in 2024.
Beyond the Greater Malé Region, MTCC operates RTL bus services across several parts of the country. The network serves Malé, Hulhumalé and Vilimalé, as well as Addu City, where buses connect Hithadhoo, Maradhoo, Maradhoo-Feydhoo, Feydhoo and Hulhumeedhoo through the Link Road.
RTL buses also operate in Fuvahmulah City, Gan, Fonadhoo, Isdhoo and Kalaidhoo in Laamu Atoll, Raa Dhuvaafaru, and Noonu Kendhikulhudhoo.
Alongside its bus network, RTL provides ferry services across the atolls. The ferry service began in three atolls four years ago and has since expanded to 16 atolls.
MTCC has yet to introduce the service in four atolls: Kaafu, Alifu Alifu, Alifu Dhaalu and Vaavu, which fall under Zone 3. The company is currently working to introduce the service in these atolls.
As the ferry network has expanded, it has served hundreds of thousands of passengers across different regions. MTCC figures show that 477,215 passengers used RTL ferry services last year. Zone 1, comprising Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu and Shaviyani atolls, recorded the highest passenger volume across the network, with 245,274 passengers.
Zone 5 recorded the second-highest passenger volume, with 110,130 passengers travelling across Gaafu Alifu and Gaafu Dhaalu atolls.
The figures also state that 110,130 passengers used ferry services in Zone 5, comprising Thaa and Laamu atolls. Zone 2, comprising Noonu, Raa, Baa and Lhaviyani atolls, recorded 81,161 passengers, while Zone 6, comprising Fuvahmulah and Addu, recorded 34,877 passengers. Zone 4, comprising Meemu, Faafu and Dhaalu atolls, recorded 5,773 passengers.
Across the network, RTL bus and ferry services recorded a combined 16.2 million passengers last year. The figure stood at 16.1 million in 2024 and 15.6 million in 2023, compared with 12.2 million in 2022, when RTL services began.
The RTL network connects the country through a single transport network, making travel between islands easier. It provides greater convenience for people travelling for routine purposes and essential needs, including healthcare, while affordable fares offer further convenience to the public.
