President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said development projects are progressing across the Maldives from north to south, with some scheduled for completion this year, while 2027 is expected to see the completion of the largest number of development projects.
The President made the remarks during the sixth episode of The Pulse podcast series. The episode, published today on the President’s Office media platforms, focuses on infrastructure development projects underway across different parts of the Maldives.
During the episode, President Dr Muizzu also listened to views and sentiments expressed by members of the public on the subject and responded to several issues they raised. Addressing concerns that progress on some development projects had slowed, the President said the economic challenges faced by the country had been overcome and that practical work would resume and move forward without much further delay.
He said the work is being scheduled to cover different sectors, adding that some projects will continue to be completed during 2028. While the Government is implementing a sustainable medium- and long-term development policy, President Dr Muizzu said there are certain services that every citizen should receive at a particular standard on every island, and that work based on this principle will continue.
President Dr Muizzu also shared updates on several major projects currently underway as part of the country’s development plans.
Noting that council offices on the islands were in a very poor condition when the current Government assumed office, the President said the Government is currently carrying out a project to construct modern council office buildings. He expressed hope that, once the project is completed, the need for such offices will be met by around the middle of 2027.
He added that several other projects are also underway to develop council offices and said he believes that, within the next two years, council offices on around 100 islands will be operating from new buildings.
President Dr Muizzu also highlighted the transport system as one of the most important components of development. He said airport development projects carry both economic and social benefits, adding that, when implemented properly, such projects can also generate returns.
Providing an update on the Thilamalé Bridge project being developed in the Malé region, President Dr Muizzu also reflected on how the project had progressed in the past. He said the project is now progressing at a faster pace than before and expressed confidence that the bridge project will be completed before long.
The President also provided detailed responses to questions from a journalist regarding development projects in Addu City, which is home to the largest number of Maldivians after Malé City.
Concluding the sixth episode of The Pulse, President Dr Muizzu said the largest project being undertaken by his Government is the relocation of the port from Malé to Thilafushi. He gave assurance that the project will be completed by 11 November 2027.
