As the Maldives commemorates National Day, several former Presidents and high-ranking officials have issued statements of celebration and reflection, honouring the nation's heritage and sovereignty.
Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom was among the first to mark the occasion. In a message shared on social media, he expressed great pleasure in extending sincere best wishes to all Maldivian citizens. He described the day as a moment of pride for the entire nation, emphasising the deep historical significance of the annual celebration.
Adding to the tributes, former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih offered his good wishes while highlighting the responsibilities inherent in Maldivian identity. He said that safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty, protecting the fundamental rights and freedoms of its people, and upholding democratic principles are essential duties to be fulfilled for the benefit of future generations.
Former President Mohamed Nasheed also joined in the commemorations, sending his official greetings to the public as the country celebrates its liberation and identity.
The spirit of the day was further echoed by the Speaker of the Parliament, Abdul Raheem Abdulla. The Speaker extended his warm congratulations and good wishes to all Maldivian citizens, joining the country’s leadership in recognising the enduring importance of National Day.
