First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has said that the national jihad of Al-Ghazi Mohamed Thakurufaanu Al-Auzam, known as Bodu Thakurufaanu, is an example of the courage and bravery of the Maldivian people.
In a message shared on social media on the occasion of National Day, the First Lady said that Bodu Thakurufaanu’s jihad symbolises the unity and determination of the Maldivian people.
As we commemorate the valiant heroes who fought for the independence of the Maldivian nation, I extend my greetings on this joyous National Day,” First Lady Sajidha Mohamed said in her message.
National Day is commemorated to mark the liberation of the Maldives from Portuguese rule by Mohamed Thakurufaanu. The day is observed on the first day of Rabi' al-Awwal in the 981st year of the Hijri calendar.
The government places particular emphasis on commemorating national days with due significance. Accordingly, the government has decided to hold a range of activities to mark this year’s National Day. The official National Day ceremony will be held in Utheemu, the birthplace of National Day hero Mohamed Thakurufaanu.
