Prison reforms delivering positive results

Commissioner of Prisons Hassan Zareer has said ongoing reforms to the Maldives' prison system are beginning to deliver positive results, with efforts to improve facilities, services and security yielding tangible outcomes.

He highlighted the government's steadfast commitment to addressing long-standing challenges within the correctional system, with comprehensive reforms over the past two and a half years contributing to increased capacity and promising outcomes.

Upon assuming his post, Commissioner Zareer noted numerous areas requiring improvement. However, he credited the consistent guidance from the President and the relevant Minister for the systematic progress made in addressing these issues.

A cornerstone of this reform is the work of the Institute of Correctional Studies, which Zareer emphasised is vital for strengthening the prison system, stating that a robust framework cannot be established without improving the quality of the institution itself.

The government's dedication to reforming the Maldives Correctional Service includes concrete measures such as increasing prison space and investing significantly in the training and employment of more correctional officers. These initiatives have directly led to an increased capacity across the prison system.

"The success of the effort is being seen with better infrastructure, environment, services, rehabilitation programmes and security and equipment to maintain the safety and security of the prisons,” he said.

He further noted that the comprehensive reform agenda recognises and aims to alleviate the suffering previously endured by both staff and inmates.

While acknowledging that prison security had not previously been strengthened to the desired level despite evolving times, Zareer highlighted recent advancements. He confirmed the installation of new body scanners and baggage scanning systems, a critical step towards enhancing safety and security within correctional facilities.

Underscoring the broader importance of this, Zareer stressed that a nation's security and safety are fundamental to its survival, with weaknesses in this area adversely impacting vital sectors like the economy and health system.

Expressing optimism for the future, Commissioner Zareer affirmed that the Maldives Correctional Service is undergoing positive changes. He voiced his hope to better facilitate the needs of active officers and ensure the thorough provision of necessary assistance and rehabilitation works for inmates.
