Fenaka Corporation has announced that the manufacturing of engines required for the Addu Central Power Station is nearing completion, marking a key milestone in efforts to address long-standing electricity challenges in Addu City.
According to the company, four generators will be brought into the country under the project.
Power outages remain one of the most significant utility challenges facing Addu City, one of the country's most populous urban centres. To address the issue, the government has commenced practical work on the development of a central power station.
Speaking to PSM News, Fenaka said the project will include the installation of four 5.2-megawatt generators. The company stated that the new powerhouse will provide a long-term solution to Addu’s electricity supply issues and will have a total generation capacity of 26 megawatts.
Fenaka estimates that construction of the facility will be completed and the power station commissioned by the middle of next year. The utility company also noted that a 1.8-megawatt generator was installed and brought into operation in Addu last month.
While the additional generator has helped reduce the frequency of power interruptions, Fenaka said it serves only as a temporary measure rather than a permanent solution to the city's electricity challenges.
To ensure a comprehensive solution, the company said work is also underway to upgrade Addu’s electricity distribution network ahead of the commissioning of the new power station.
The Addu Central Power Station will be equipped with low-speed engines manufactured by Anglo Belgian Corporation (ABC) of Belgium.
Fenaka said the engines differ from the high-speed generators currently in operation in Addu. As such, Fenaka revealed that low-speed engines are highly durable and sustain optimal performance over the long term. The physical development of the Addu Central Power Station has been contracted to Definite Solutions, a company based in Dubai.
