The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) and the Maldives Institute of Technology (MIT) have officially launched a joint venture programme aimed at empowering women in society by teaching them technical skills.
The initiative, titled "Vilunveri Kanbalun," seeks to increase women's self-confidence and equip them with basic technical skills rather than relying on others.
This year, 264 participants applied for the programme, and according to the HDC, all applicants have been given the opportunity to participate. The training programme, which is divided into different batches, commenced on 5 June.
Based on the experience of the pilot programme of 2023, the scope of the training has been significantly expanded. In addition to teaching participants how to repair household electrical appliances, this year's program will also include training on basic motorcycle repair. All participants who successfully complete the programme will be awarded certificates.
Under the agreement between MIT and HDC, such training will help women become skilled and familiar with household chores while also gaining valuable technical knowledge. Additionally, the agreement will provide additional skills development programmes targeting people with disabilities and youth in the future, extending the impact of this initiative beyond the initial participants.
