Emphasising personal responsibility, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has urged all Maldivians to participate in the nation's largest tree planting initiative.
In his remarks on The Pulse, the President called on every citizen to take personal responsibility for greening Maldives. He emphasised that collective effort is essential to restore the country's natural environment and called on all Maldivians—particularly the youth—to participate actively in the ambitious five million tree planting programme.
The programme, which has been designated as a special priority by the government, aims to restore endangered tree species, increase overall greenery, and sustain the environment for future generations. While acknowledging that some development projects require trees to be cut down, the President assured that significantly more trees will be planted to compensate for any loss.
The five million tree planting programme stands as the largest initiative of its kind ever conducted in Maldives. To date, 6.4 million trees have been pledged under the programme exceeding the original target, with more than 1.6 million trees already in the ground.
A key focus of the initiative is the revival of endangered native species. Under the programme, 90 tree species currently classified as endangered in Maldives will be identified, listed, and planted across the archipelago.
The President concluded with a direct appeal to the youth, urging them to increase their participation in greening efforts and work together to ensure a greener, more sustainable Maldives for generations to come.
