The election of the Maldives to the United Nations Economic and Social Council for the first time is evidence that the international community has accepted the foreign policy of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, Iruthisham Adam, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, stated.
The island nation successfully secured a seat for the 2027 to 2029 term on the council, widely known as ECOSOC. Securing this position represents a proud and historic triumph for the nation, serving to validate the global endorsement of the president’s diplomatic strategies, Minister Iruthisham noted.
“The election of the Maldives to ECOSOC for the first time is a proud and historic moment for our country,” Minister Iruthisham stated. “It reflects the international community’s confidence and trust in the Maldives, and the foreign policy of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.”
The election outcome is a definitive acknowledgement of the country's dedicated work toward advancing sustainable development, combating the adverse impacts of climate change, and championing the rights of small island developing states, Minister Iruthisham highlighted.
She continued, “And is a recognition of the long-standing commitment of the Maldives to sustainable development, climate action, and its advocacy on the priorities of small island developing States. We express our sincere appreciation to all Member States for their support and confidence”.
In light of this significant backing, the Maldives extended its sincere gratitude to the member states of the United Nations, Minister Iruthisham added. As one of the six principal organs of the United Nations, ECOSOC coordinates the work of the United Nations system on economic, social and related issues. The council also plays a key role in reviewing progress on the implementation of internationally agreed development goals, including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
