The Maldives will work consistently to deepen its relationship with the Commonwealth and enhance collaboration across essential areas of mutual priority, Iruthisham Adam, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, assured during a meeting with the organisation's secretary-general.
The diplomatic discussions, which Minister Iruthisham noted stood as a crucial milestone within broader ongoing efforts to sustain and strengthen international relations, took place at Marlborough House, the Commonwealth's main headquarters situated in London, United Kingdom, where the foreign minister convened with Secretary-General Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey to discuss efforts to further strengthen ties.
The prominent role the Maldives plays and the close relationship it maintains in prioritising the rights of small island nations within the global network are deeply appreciated, Secretary-General Botchwey stated in a post to social media following the dialogue.
“We value the Maldives' close engagement with the Commonwealth and its leadership in championing the priorities of small states and SIDS across our Commonwealth family,” the secretary-general wrote.
Welcoming the foreign minister to Marlborough House was a profound pleasure, Secretary-General Botchwey added, observing that the recent dialogue will pave the way for elevating the relationship between the Commonwealth and the Maldives to even greater heights in the future.
The Commonwealth is an international organisation composed of 56 member nations. Following its decision to rejoin the coalition, the Maldives has actively collaborated with the body across a diverse array of sectors, continuing to command a leading position on the international stage by robustly protecting the diplomatic interests of small island states.
