President Muizzu praises Scout movement as a uniting force across communities

The Scout movement bridges the geographical divide between island communities from the north to the south of the Maldives, serving as a powerful force that unites Maldivian youth, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said in a congratulatory address marking the 70th anniversary of the introduction of the movement.

In remarks commemorating seven decades since the formal inception of scouting in the country, President Muizzu expressed deep appreciation for the individuals who historically championed the movement and those who advance its operations today. Characterised by mutual care, the initiative fosters a responsible, self-reliant generation built upon strong moral principles, he said, adding that the courage, resolve, and altruism of individual scouts reflect ancestral values of respect.

The movement stands as an exemplary model of humanitarian service, demonstrated repeatedly throughout the nation's history. During times of national crisis, most notably the devastating Indian Ocean Tsunami of 26 December 2004, the scouts proved their unwavering readiness to serve without hesitation, President Muizzu noted, stating that their leadership, vigilance, and voluntary spirit provide a robust template for society.

"The skills and experiences I gained from the scout movement during my own educational journey served as a guiding force for every step I have taken,” he stated. “By instilling the Cub Scout motto to 'Do Your Best' and the Scout motto to 'Be Prepared' across all facets of life, these form the precise foundational experiences I am certain our youth require today. Consequently, there is no doubt in my mind that we must ensure organisations like the scout movement are preserved and advanced in their truest, original form."

The president assured the Scout Association and its participating members that the government will provide full support to expand and advance scouting activities throughout the country.
