Maldives Zakat House has announced a revision to the Nisab for Zakat al-Mal, the mandatory Islamic practice of almsgiving that plays a vital role in wealth purification and societal welfare.
The Nisab represents the minimum wealth threshold necessitating the payment of Zakat. In the Maldives, the Nisab threshold is based on global silver prices. As such, any change in the price of silver affects the minimum amount of wealth required before Zakat becomes payable.
Effective from 21 April, the new Nisab for Zakat al-Mal has been set at approximately USD 1,416, up from the previous figure of USD 1,266 established in December 2025. This value is calculated at the rate of USD 2.38 per one gram of silver, based on 595 grams of silver.
Zakat al-Mal payments require that a full lunar year has elapsed since the wealth reached the Nisab. Since 1 June 2016, the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) has been responsible for collecting Zakat al-Mal.
