MIRA to roll out e-invoicing system within this year

The Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) has announced that its e-invoicing system, aimed at supporting taxpayers and improving efficiency, will be completed within this year.

MIRA said the system represents a key step in strengthening and modernising tax administration in line with international standards.

Speaking on a PSM News programme, Deputy Commissioner General of Taxation Fathimath Ameeza said the e-invoicing system will allow MIRA to directly monitor transactions and documents submitted by taxpayers. She noted that similar systems are widely used in developed countries.

Ameeza said preliminary work on the system began in mid-2025, including research into suitable models and necessary preparations.

“Since mid-2025, we have been conducting preliminary reviews, researching the most suitable models and making preparations to complete the work within this year. We are working towards implementing this system,” she said.

She described the initiative as an important step in advancing the digitalisation of the taxation system, improving transparency and streamlining processes for both taxpayers and the authority.

Ameeza also noted a decline in taxpayer compliance following the COVID-19 pandemic. She said efforts have been ongoing since last year to address the issue, including engagement with stakeholders in sectors most affected.
