Maldives National University (MNU) has awarded the project to construct a campus and student accommodation block in Villingili, Gaafu Alif Atoll to Solex Private Limited
The campus development is part of a broader effort under President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge to enhance access to higher education across the country. The President’s vision extends beyond just enhancing access to higher education, but rather also to reduce the dependency on the Greater Male’ Region for the pursuance of higher education.
As part of President Dr Muizzu’s higher education policy, MNU and Islamic University of Maldives (IUM) campuses are being developed throughout the nation. Accordingly, the practical work for some of these projects has already commenced. The development of these campuses includes various classrooms and accommodation blocks for prospective students to reside in.
The government aims to complete these projects within the next two years and complete its five-year term with a more comprehensive, inclusive higher education system.
Prior to the current administration, only four MNU campuses existed in the atolls. Currently, projects are underway to develop 26 MNU campuses and 12 IUM campuses across the nation, signaling the administration’s commitment towards the fulfillment of its higher education targets.
In addition to the development of education campuses, the government has also earmarked a project to develop language schools in three regions of the country. The project will complement the nation’s tourism sector by facilitating various language studies, hence boosting students’ employability in the industry. The language schools are being developed in Kulhudhuffushi City, Addu City and Fonadhoo, Laamu Atoll.
