879 sports projects underway nationwide

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said the Government is currently implementing 879 sports development projects across the country, with all projects expected to be completed within the next 12 months.

The President made the remarks in his Presidential Statement to the Parliament, where he underscored the importance of sports and physical fitness in promoting public health.

He said the Government completed 33 sports projects last year, in addition to finishing 59 projects that had remained incomplete under the previous administration. In total, 92 sports projects have been completed so far.

“The Government is working on 879 projects at various stages across different parts of the country. All of these projects will be completed and handed over within the next 12 months,” the President said.

President Muizzu also announced that 16 sports complexes will been opened, including facilities in Malé, Hulhumalé, and Villimalé. He added that contracts for the construction of sports complexes will be awarded to five more islands this year.

The President said the Government is prioritising the development of the sports sector to encourage wider participation in sports, promote healthy lifestyles, and help prevent non-communicable diseases.
