The Speaker of the Maldives’ Parliament, Abdul Raheem Abdulla, commended Saudi Arabia’s efforts to promote peace and justice in the Middle East during a courtesy call on the Speaker of Saudi Arabia’s Shura Council, Sheikh Dr Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Ibrahim Al Sheikh, during an official visit to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
According to officials, discussions focused on the long-standing relationship between the Maldives and Saudi Arabia, rooted in shared Islamic values and centuries old religious, cultural, and historical ties.
Speaker Abdul Raheem expressed appreciation for Saudi Arabia’s continued support for the Maldives’ development, particularly through the Saudi Fund for Development. He highlighted the Fund’s role in key infrastructure projects, including housing initiatives, water and sewerage systems, and the modernisation of Velana International Airport.
The meeting also explored opportunities to strengthen cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, tourism, and renewable energy. Both sides discussed ways to institutionalise parliamentary cooperation to further enhance engagement between the two legislatures.
The Maldivian Speaker reiterated the Maldives’ unwavering support for the Palestinian cause.
The speaker also underlined the Maldives’ vulnerability to climate change and expressed hope for Saudi Arabia’s continued leadership in advancing environmental sustainability and supporting climate-vulnerable nations.
In addition, Speaker Abdul Raheem conveyed his gratitude to the Saudi Government for the facilitation of Hajj and Umrah arrangements for Maldivian pilgrims, while expressing hope for continued improvements to travel and entry procedures.
The meeting concluded with the Speaker thanking Saudi Arabia for the warm hospitality extended to the Maldivian delegation. He also formally invited the Speaker of the Shura Council to visit the Maldives at a mutually convenient time.
