Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has said that the public should elect leaders who do not interfere in the name of accountability, calling instead for leaders who can work at the same pace as President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
The Vice President made the remarks while speaking at the opening of the campaign office of People's National Congress (PNC) candidate Moosa Ali Jaleel for the upcoming local council elections.
In his address, the Vice President stressed the importance of electing leaders capable of resolving the issues facing the city. He noted that the city has a strong historical background and said the President has been closely involved in its development. He also stated that there are many capable individuals who can support city development and maintain strong working relationships, adding that his vision for the city has already been outlined in his manifesto.
The Vice President said the city needs a leader who works at the same pace as the President and added that the PNC is contesting the local council elections with such a candidate. He reiterated that he does not support leaders who interfere under the pretext of accountability, noting that accountability is already ensured through elected representatives and institutions.
“The appointees have been elected as representatives. Therefore, the government will be held accountable by members of constituencies and institutions. Councils and city councils, as our President has said, need leaders who work with the government to facilitate services for the people. That is the kind of leader I am referring to,” the Vice President said.
During his speech, the Vice President also highlighted several issues affecting Malé City. Describing the city as a busy area, he said residents should be able to live in peace and security. Referring to issues such as parking, he said the government is already working to implement solutions and noted that the Mayor of Malé City has to be one of the key contributors in this effort. However, he said such progress has not been seen over the past two years.
The Vice President further stated that the PNC had previously contested elections with the same team, led by the Mayor, and emphasised that the country needs leaders who genuinely love the nation.
