President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has appointed Dr Aishath Rameela as the President of the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM).
Parliament, during an extraordinary sitting on Tuesday, signed off on Parliament’s Human Rights and Gender Committee’s endorsement with 38 lawmakers voting in favour.
Dr Aishath Rameela was formally sworn in as a member of the HRCM on 3rd December.
Previously, she was appointed as the first Agriculture and Animal Welfare Minister by the current administration but resigned in December 2024 citing health reasons.
HRCM comprises of five members, with Dr Aishath Rameea as the President, Mohamed Shafeeg Mahmood as Vice President, and Samaau Ahmed Najeeb, Ismail Habeeb Abdul Rahman, Ahmed Magsoom as members of the commission.
