President nominates former Minister Dr Rameela to head HRCM

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has nominated former Minister, Dr Aishath Rameela as the new Chair of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).

The nomination is currently being vetted by the Parliamentary Human Rights and Gender Committee.

Rameela, who was appointed as an HRCM member on 3 December 2025, following the expiration of Mariyam Muna’s term, is now being recommended to lead the Commission. The HRCM presidency became vacant after Muna’s tenure ended, requiring the President to appoint a new head with parliamentary consent.

A seasoned public servant, Rameela was the first Agriculture and Animal Welfare Minister appointed by the current administration but resigned in December 2024 due to health reasons.

The HRCM currently comprises five members, including Vice-President Mohamed Shafeeq Mahmood and members Smaau Ahmed Najeeb, Ismail Habeeb, Ahmed Maqsoom, and Dr Rameela.
