Electric vehicles to be procured for irrigation under 5-million tree programme

The Ministry of Tourism and Environment (MoTE) has confirmed that electric vehicles will be obtained for watering plants under the 5-million tree programme.

Speaking at a press conference on 25th December, the Minister of Tourism and Environment, Thoriq Ibrahim has highlighted that 1,027,372 trees have been planted to date under the 5-million tree programme. Despite the original target of 5-million trees, the goal has been expanded to 6.4 million trees with assistance from state-owned enterprises, private sector and civil society organisations.

While the year-end target of 1 million trees has been accomplished, 2 teak trees have also been planted in every inhabited island in the Maldives.

This initiative aims to restore native plant populations and enhance biodiversity, reflecting the country’s strong commitment to environmental conservation and combatting climate change.

Minister Thoriq Ibrahim has stated that as water is essential for plant development, electric vehicles are being sought out for irrigation purposes, with emphasis being placed on trees in larger islands and alongside road infrastructures. He has commended the support received for this initiative from government agencies, civil society organisations, schools, councils, and the broader public.

MoTE has cited that trees are being planted continuously throughout the country in efforts to reach the desired goal of 5 million trees. This project aims to establish and preserve a greener, healthier environment for future generations.
