WAMCO Awarded Contract for New Met Office Building at Gan Airport

The Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) has secured the contract to construct a new Maldives Meteorological Service building at Gan International Airport as part of ongoing efforts to modernise the Maldives' weather services.

According to the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, the project will strengthen the country’s Early Warning Framework, ensuring faster and more accurate weather information for Gan Airport and the southern regions.

The move aligns with the Met Office’s broader initiative to enhance weather monitoring, including plans to install a new weather radar in Addu City. Currently, the sole operational radar in Hulhule’ covers a 250 km radius, but future expansions aim to create a nationwide radar network for improved real-time forecasting.

Additionally, the Met Office has announced a new weather observatory in Maafaru, Noonu Atoll—the sixth in the country—to bolster data collection in the northern region. Existing observatories in Hanimaadhoo, Kadhdhoo, and Gan, along with 20 automated weather stations, already support monitoring efforts.

With USD 1.6 million in funding from a UN Environment Programme finance facility, the Met Office will upgrade observation systems in Hanimaadhoo, Hulhule’, Kadhdhoo, and Gan, while also repairing the Upper Air (Radiosonde) system.
