Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam said on Wednesday that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s administration is confident it can deliver on its commitments to the country’s beleaguered fisheries sector early in its tenure.
Speaking at the opening of a fishermen’s forum under the banner 'Masveringe Gunzaru', Minister Shiyam acknowledged the formidable challenges inherited by the government. He said the breadth of presidential pledges underscored the severity of the industry’s prior condition, which had left deep structural problems requiring urgent attention.
The minister noted that while the administration is actively pursuing its objectives, certain initiatives will take time to establish the necessary financial frameworks. He assured participants that a strategic roadmap is already being implemented to ensure the fulfilment of nearly all promises.
Minister Shiyam underscored that consultation with industry stakeholders remains a priority, with the government committed to integrating feedback into policy wherever possible. Such engagement, he said, is essential to addressing entrenched challenges that demand significant investment.
The forum, convened in Dhuvaafaru in Raa Atoll, brought together forty fishermen representing nine atolls. Designed as a platform for dialogue, the gathering allowed participants to present grievances and receive updates on the government’s progress in revitalising the sector.
