Parliament Reviews Motion on OIC Labour Centre Accession

The Parliament’s Foreign Relations Committee has been asked to review a motion authorising the Maldives to join the Labour Centre of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). President Dr Mohamed Muizzu submitted the request to obtain legislative consent for signing and ratifying the centre’s statute, following a Cabinet decision reached on 10 November 2025.

The administration highlighted that, as the centre operates as an independent legal entity, accession to its governing document requires parliamentary approval under existing law. The Speaker referred the matter to the committee for consideration, placing the proposal under formal legislative scrutiny.

The Labour Centre, established in 2023 as a specialised institution within the OIC, is mandated to advance social development across the bloc’s 57 member states. Its objectives include fostering suitable working environments, expanding employment opportunities, and strengthening social protection systems, with the broader aim of ensuring sustainable security and eradicating poverty.

The Maldives has been a member of the wider OIC since 1976.
