Speaker of the Parliament, Abdul Raheem Abdulla has stated that the nationwide telethon organised to help the people of Sri Lanka as the country faces devastation caused by extreme weather, reflects the strength of the government’s foreign policy.
The ruling People’s National Congress (PNC)‘s Parliamentary Group donated USD 19,455 to the “Ceylon Aa Eku Dhivehin” telethon fund. Handing over the contribution, the Speaker, representing PNC, the Speaker said the group extends condolences to the families of those killed in the disaster. He assured that the party’s Parliamentary Group stands ready to support the people of Sri Lanka.
Highlighting the long-standing brotherly relations between the Maldives and Sri Lanka, Abdul Raheem said the Maldives’ swift response to Sri Lanka’s call for assistance demonstrates the robustness of the country’s foreign policy.
He further urged all parties, including individuals, businesses and associations to lend their support to Sri Lanka, describing it as a national concern. He underscored the deep ties between both countries, noting that a large number of Maldivians reside in Sri Lanka for various purposes.
PNC Parliamentary Group Leader Ibrahim Falah said the donation was given on behalf of the people of the constituencies across the Maldives. The ruling party’s Parliamentary Group would always be among the first to respond to such appeals for assistance, he stated.
