President Muizzu’s Ambassadorial Nominations to Jordan and Palestine Referred to Committee

Parliament has referred President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s nominations of two ambassadors to its Foreign Relations Committee for review, seeking approval for appointments to Jordan and Palestine.

Under the Constitution, the president may appoint Resident and Non-resident Ambassadors, subject to parliamentary consent. In line with this requirement, President Muizzu advanced the names of two senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Dr Hala Hameed, Bilateral Secretary at the ministry, has been nominated as Ambassador to Jordan. She has built a career in foreign affairs and continues to play an active role in bilateral engagement. Dr Ibrahim Zuhuree, Additional Secretary at the ministry, has been nominated as Ambassador to Palestine. He is likewise noted for his extensive service in the diplomatic sector.

Ambassadorial appointments in the Maldives are often drawn from senior ministry officials or those serving in diplomatic missions abroad. Alongside resident envoys, the government has increasingly relied on non-resident appointments to extend its reach.

These nominations fall within that category, aimed at strengthening ties with countries where the Maldives has not established embassies or high commissions. The government of President Muizzu has made strategic use of such roles, appointing non-resident ambassadors to 27 countries to date.
