Maldives Concludes Fourth Cycle of the Universal Periodic Review in Geneva

The Maldives has participated in the 4th cycle of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) held at the UN Office in Geneva, Switzerland, and has concluded its review session.

The UPR review process is a cyclical review of each UN member state's human rights record conducted by the UN Human Rights Council. It involves a three-part preparation phase based on reports from the state, the UN, and other stakeholders, followed by a 3.5-hour interactive dialogue with other UN member states where questions and recommendations are made.

During the Maldives’ review session, Attorney General Ahmed Usham highlighted the country’s achievements in protecting human rights and the milestones achieved, as well as its efforts to safeguard civil and political rights, strengthen law enforcement, and empower and protect vulnerable groups requiring special care and assistance.

A total of 104 countries participated in the Maldives’ review session, with many participating states expressing appreciation for the efforts made by the Maldives to implement the recommendations from the previous review cycle.

Member states also presented new recommendations for the Maldives to consider for the next cycle. These included advancing women’s empowerment, promoting gender equality, protecting children's rights, mitigating the impact of climate change, and strengthening health and overall well-being.

Additionally, it was also recommended that the Maldives continue its efforts to ensure inclusive participation in the formulation of national development plans. Of these recommendations, the Maldives will implement only those recommendations it chooses to accept.

The Maldives has until 12 December to decide which of the submitted recommendations it will adopt.
