Maldives Pledges Inclusive Society, Gender Equality at UN Human Rights Review

The Maldives has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to building an inclusive society where human rights are ensured and justice is established.

This pledge was made by the Minister of Social and Family Development, Dr Aishath Shiham, during the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of the Human Rights Situation in Maldives.

Speaking at the international forum, the Minister emphasised the government's dedication to protecting vulnerable groups and empowering all citizens to live with dignity.

Minister Dr Aishath Shiham highlighted that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's administration is actively pursuing policies aimed at establishing social security and fostering an inclusive society. These efforts include identifying vulnerable families early, providing timely assistance, and implementing empowerment programmes, she said.

The government, according to the Minister, is taking necessary steps to protect the rights of women, children, people with disabilities, and the elderly, ensuring their full participation in society.

A significant focus of the government's strategy is increasing women's participation at the policy-making level. Minister Dr Aishath Shiham specifically cited the Decentralization Act, which allocates 33 percent of council seats to women. This legislative measure has dramatically boosted female representation, with women now holding 39.7 percent of local council positions, a substantial rise from 6.1 percent in 2017, she explained.

Underscoring the government's commitment to equitable leadership, Minister Dr Aishath Shiham revealed that women currently hold 83 percent of senior civil service positions and 56 percent of executive-level roles. She also noted that 49 percent of lawyers in the Maldives are women, reflecting a broader trend of female advancement in professional fields.

Beyond public service, the Minister outlined efforts to empower women in the business sector, including a newly introduced USD 6.5 million loan scheme for women entrepreneurs, with 25 percent of the scheme specifically allocated to people with disabilities.
