Registration has opened for media outlet representatives to vote in the upcoming Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission election.
Under regulations issued by the Election Commission of Maldives (ECM) in line with the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Regulation Act, each media outlet may nominate one representative to cast a vote in the election to select members of the Media Commission.
While the election has been slated for 11 October, the ECM has released the details of the media eligible to vote in the election.
Applications to register as voters must be submitted via ECM’s official online portal. All required fields on the form must be completed, and supporting documents confirming that the nominated individual has been formally delegated the responsibility to vote on behalf of the outlet must be submitted.
If the broadcaster or media outlet is a subsidiary of a company or executive committee, the submission must include a formal board or committee resolution confirming the nomination, and must include the name, atoll, island, address, identity card number of the nominated voter. The document must also bear the company seal.
If the broadcaster or media is operated under a government ministry or agency, a document signed by the minister or a head of the agency must be provided. Outlets run by private individuals must submit a document stating that voting has been entrusted to the registrant.
The ECM has set the deadline for registration to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday.
The Media Commission comprises seven members: three appointed by the Parliament and four members elected by the media. The election on 11 October will determine the four members elected from among the media: two from among broadcasters and two representing other media outlets.
