Govt Partners with World Bank to Fund Agricultural Science Education

The government, in collaboration with the World Bank, has launched a scholarship initiative aimed at strengthening the country’s agricultural sector through targeted investment in higher education.

Ten fully funded scholarships will be awarded under the ‘Transforming Fisheries Management in Southwest Indian Ocean Region and Maldives’ project. The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources confirmed that the programme will support enrolment in the Diploma in Agricultural Science at the Maldives National University (MNU).

Ministry officials described the initiative as a strategic effort to cultivate specialised expertise in agricultural science. By expanding the pool of trained professionals, the government seeks to enhance domestic food production and reduce dependence on imports.

Applications must be submitted to the Project Management Unit of the Fisheries Ministry, with a deadline set for 18 September. Candidates may also apply electronically via email to [email protected].

The scholarship package includes full tuition coverage. Students participating in the blended learning format, particularly those travelling from the atolls to Malé, will receive round-trip airfare and a travel allowance, according to the ministry. Each recipient will also be granted a monthly stipend for the duration of their studies.
