The practical work to widen Boduthakurufaanu Magu to four lanes and upgrade the road to modern standards has commenced. The project was inaugurated by the Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, Abdulla Muththalib.
The government aims to develop roads in the Male’ City to modern standards and implement effective solutions to the city’s congestion problem. The development of the northern side of the city, along Boduthakurufaanu Magu, is now being upgraded in multiple phases. The work has been awarded to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).
The Boduthakurufaanu Magu project is divided into three segments. It includes the construction of 830 metres of road and 737 metres of sheet piling. A tarred subbase, a dedicated lane for pedestrians and a drainage system are also planned. The project, which also covers the installation of drainage service lines, street lights and road signs, has been contracted to MTCC at a cost of over USD 9.3 million, with a scheduled completion time of one year and three months.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Minister Muththalib said the government was working to address the difficulties faced by residents navigating Male’ roads due to congestion. He added that the upgrades will make the city safer and more comfortable for its residents.
"We have planned the work in a way that will minimise inconvenience for the public. We strongly urge everyone to cooperate with the government and the contractor during this period," he said.
The Minister said that various other areas of the city are being developed and renovated. The development of the Rasfannu area has been partially completed, with the second phase set to begin soon. Work on Sultan Park has already started, and the development of Republic Square will also commence very soon.
