MTCC to Develop Volleyball Court, Futsal Ground in Kinolhas

The government on Wednesday awarded the contract to develop a volleyball court and futsal ground in Kinolhas, Raa Atoll to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company Limited (MTCC).

The contract was signed by Deputy Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation Ibrahim Niyaz on behalf of the government while Deputy Managing Director Ahmed Shareef Abdul Rahman Yoosuf signed the agreement on behalf of the company for MTCC.

The volleyball court project worth USD 80,000 was awarded to MTCC for completion within 120 days which includes concrete work of the court, boundary wall and turfing.

The futsal ground project with the same deadline and scope is worth USD 112,000.

With a population of 691 people, Kinolhas’ current futsal ground built in 2015 has been in disrepair for years while the volleyball court built by the youth and the council is also in need of major repair, the island council president Ahmed Hussain told PSM News.

"The island is currently using a futsal ground built in 2015. The ground is very small and has been severely damaged. In addition, the volleyball court built by the youth and the council is also in need of repair,” he explained.

The President said the two projects will bring much needed relief to the youth and sports enthusiasts in the island.

Despite the relatively small resident population, Kinolhas’ sporting achievements in recent times have been rather remarkable, winning the Atoll Handball Tournament in 2020 and the provincial volleyball tournament with several young athletes going on to represent the Maldives in the national volleyball team.
