The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Coast Guard has detained a foreign fishing vessel found operating in breach of maritime regulations within the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
Carrying six individuals, the vessel was intercepted east of Dhiffushi, Kaafu Atoll, following surveillance that identified unauthorised fishing activity. MNDF officials confirmed the boat was taken into custody after entering Maldivian waters without the requisite authorisation.
The MNDF clarified that the vessel had been located within the EEZ, specifically to the east of Dhiffushi in Kaafu Atoll. The incident reflects a broader pattern of foreign fishing boats encroaching upon the Maldives’ maritime boundaries, a challenge that defence authorities continue to confront with regularity.
Such violations, officials noted, frequently result in the apprehension of vessels and their transfer into military custody. The nationality of the detained boat and its crew has not been disclosed.
The Coast Guard maintains active surveillance across the EEZ, deploying routine patrols designed to deter illegal fishing and uphold the Maldives’ sovereign rights over its marine resources.
