Youth Challenge 2016 closes with over 8,000 visitors

Ministry of Youth and Sports on Sunday said more than 8,000 people visited this year’s Youth Challenge, making the fair the most successful in its 18-year history. The Ministry, which organised the annual fair, hailed the event as an immense success.

This year’s fair, titled “the Opportunity Pool”, was held at the Dharubaaruge Convention Centre.

The Youth Challenge, which provides job opportunities for young people is an annual fair initiated in 1998 by the Youth Ministry. The purpose of the fair is providing youth an opportunity to have direct contact with colleges, universities and other such institutions that offer training and educational opportunities in various career fields. The fair featured 65 stalls, providing information on job opportunities, further education and training, entrepreneurship, internships and apprenticeships, and volunteering.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports said a vast majority young people who visited the fair were seeking various opportunities. It said the fair attracted 8,232 people, and out of which 1,500 visitors applied for jobs offered through the fair. And 827 youth applied for higher education opportunities and 285 youth applied for different internship programmes.

Ali Zaki Ahmed, Director General at the Youth Ministry, said the Ministry will follow through to ensure that those who applied for career opportunities receive responses from respective employers. “The fair received overwhelming support from youth making it the most successful year in the event’s history,” he added.

The previous year’s fair attracted more than 1,900 visitors while more than 2,700 people visited the fair in 2014.
