The Ministry of Economic Development and Trade has announced that the cultural centre, contracted for development on Thulhaadhoo, Baa Atoll, is intended to serve as a national hub for the preservation and instruction of traditional Maldivian arts and crafts.
The project, valued at USD 1.58 million, has been awarded to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC). Construction is scheduled to be completed within 420 days, with the facility designed to offer structured training in indigenous disciplines such as lacquer work, weaving, carpentry, and general handicrafts.
The contractual agreement was formalised during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s recent visit to Baa Atoll. During his engagements with residents of Thulhaadhoo, the island council, and the Women’s Development Committee, MTCC was officially mandated to undertake the development.
According to the ministry, the initiative reflects the president’s broader policy agenda to cultivate a creative economy, enhance national productivity, and revitalise cultural heritage. The two-storey centre will also incorporate a café and designated leisure areas, intended to accommodate both participants and visitors.
The agreement was signed by State Minister Abdulla Shiyaz on behalf of the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade and by MTCC Managing Director Ahmed Saudee, representing the contracting entity.
