The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has been awarded the contract to carry out land reclamation and beach protection works for the development of a domestic airport in Thulhaadhoo, Baa Atoll.
The land reclamation and beach protection agreement for the airport development project was signed following the cancellation of the 2023 agreement for the work. The Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure’s State Minister Hassan Rasheed signed the agreement on behalf of the Ministry while the Deputy Managing Director of MTCC, Mohamed Jamsheed signed the agreement on behalf of the company.
The airport development project forms part of the government’s policy to expand the national domestic airport network by establishing a domestic airport at a maximum distance of 30 minutes from every residential island, resort and industrial area in the Maldives. MTCC was awarded the contract for the dredging and beach protection works for the airport at a value of USD 37 million, with a project duration of 660 days.
The airport will be developed to Code 3C standards, featuring a runway measuring 1,800 metres in length and 30 metres in width. Additionally, the project involved the dredging and reclamation of 55.4 hectares of land, alongside the installation of 2,804 metres of rock revetment and 1,677 metres of geobag revetment for coastal protection.
The contract was previously awarded to Capital Marine and Construction Company, which was assigned 44.70 hectares of dredging work.
