President Muizzu Welcomes Sri Lankan Leader on First Official Visit as Nations Mark 60 Years of Diplomatic Ties

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake of Sri Lanka arrived in the Maldives on Monday morning for a state visit, where he was formally received by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu at Velana International Airport. The visit, extended at the invitation of President Muizzu, marks President Dissanayake’s first official trip to the Maldives since assuming office in September 2024.

A ceremonial welcome was held at the airport, featuring a guard of honour and a cultural performance by Maldivian students. Senior officials from both governments attended the reception, underscoring the diplomatic weight of the occasion and reaffirming the longstanding ties between the two South Asian neighbours.

The visit spans three days and is expected to include high-level discussions focused on strengthening cooperation across key sectors. Prior to the formal talks, the two leaders are scheduled to hold a private meeting. Officials from both sides anticipate the signing of several agreements aimed at deepening bilateral engagement and expanding collaboration in areas of shared interest.

This diplomatic exchange takes place at a symbolic moment in the history of Maldives–Sri Lanka relations. The visit coincides with the 60th anniversary of the establishment of formal diplomatic ties, initiated on 26 July 1965. Over the decades, the relationship has matured into a multifaceted partnership rooted in cultural affinity and regional cooperation.

President Dissanayake is expected to conclude his visit on 30 July.
