Parliament seeks public opinion on Defamation Bill

Parliament on Wednesday opened to public opinion the Bill on Defamation and Freedom of Speech.

The bill, tabled by Ungoofaaru MP Jaufar Dawood, was accepted by Parliament for consideration on Monday (August 1).

The Secretariat of Parliament said members of the public can submit their opinion on the bill in a specific format set by Parliament, specifying the details of the issues.

The deadline for submission of opinion is August 15.

The bill is being reviewed by an 11-member select committee, which on Wednesday sought opinion from the Maldives Media Council (MMC).

The committee would also hear concerns from the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (MBC) and other relevant authorities during the review process.
